Let’s see the most important characteristics of the Designation of Origin of Bajo Aragón.
The Bajo Aragón region is situated in northeastern Teruel and southeastern Zaragoza, in Spain. It stands out as the largest olive-growing area in northern Spain, making it a key reference point in the country’s olive oil production.
Bajo Aragón features two distinct morphological zones:
A northern area with lower elevations, generally above 600 meters.
A southern area with higher terrain, exceeding 800 meters in altitude.
This region boasts remarkable landscape, ecological, and cultural richness. Strategically positioned between the Ebro Valley and the Mediterranean coast, it has historically served as a crossroads for numerous civilizations, including the Iberians, Romans, Arabs, and later European cultures.
In the lower areas of Bajo Aragón, particularly around towns like Alcañiz and Valdealgorfa, the landscape is dominated by extensive olive groves, along with crops of cereals, vines, and almonds. This zone falls within a medium-terranean climatic range and features a diverse natural vegetation. Tree species such as holm oaks, gall oaks, and various types of pines are common. Among the typical shrubs and aromatic plants are lavender, thyme, rosemary, and heather.
As the altitude increases, the landscape transitions into coniferous and pine forests, reflecting the ecological diversity of the region.
Southern Aragón has a Mediterranean climate with strong continental influences. This results in extreme temperatures in both summer and winter, and low annual rainfall. Precipitation varies significantly from year to year, alternating between periods of drought and relatively rainy seasons.
These arid conditions are further intensified by high evaporation rates, strong and persistent winds, and sharp temperature fluctuations.
Such a harsh and demanding environment shapes the character of the olive trees, especially of the Empeltre variety, resulting in a unique and authentic extra virgin olive oil that reflects the essence of the land.

A wide range of olive varieties are cultivated in Bajo Aragón, including:
Empeltre, Royal, Arbequina, Verdeña, Negral, Manzanilla, and Farga, among others.
