Below we show you the most important characteristics of the Designation of Origin oil:

a) Orography and climatology

Baena is known for its gentle rolling hills interspersed with rugged terrain. Located in Spain, this region enjoys long, warm summers and mild, rainy winters — a perfect example of the classic Mediterranean climate

b)Regions

The Baena Designation of Origin covers some 60,000 hectares of olive groves in the east of the province of Córdoba, in Analusia. Among the municipalities it covers, we have Doñaa Mencía, Luque, Nueva Carteya, Zuheros, Castro del Río; Baena and Cabra.

c) Olive varieties

This region of Spain is home to a wide range of olive varieties, including Hojiblanca, Picual, Lechín, Chorrúa, and Pajarera, among others.

d) Soil

The soil in this region is predominantly limestone, rich in calcium carbonate — similar to much of the province of Jaén. Therefore, a soil type very suitable for olive groves farming.

e) History

It was the Arabs, upon their arrival in the Iberian Peninsula, who expanded olive cultivation throughout this area. These villages are also steeped in history, with numerous archaeological sites from the Iberian, pre-Roman, Roman, and Arab periods.

f) New harvest

The new harvest of Baena olive oils typically begins to arrive at the end of November. The first to appear are the fresh, early-pressed oils — often sold in glass bottles. Oils bearing the Designation of Origin follow later, usually becoming available by the end of December, although these dates may vary slightly each year.

If you want to ensure the oil you purchase is from the latest harvest, feel free to contact us.

c) German Baena’s brands

This cooperative is located in the town of Baena, in the province of Córdoba, and markets its olive oils under the following brands:

  • Duque de Baena: This is their finest extra virgin olive oil. They also offer a premium version called Duque de Baena Gold Selection, which carries the Baena Designation of Origin.
  • German Baena: Another high-quality extra virgin olive oil with Denomination of Origin, offered at a more affordable price point.
  • Hacienda Real: An extra virgin olive oil that is only bottled in plastic. Because it is not packaged in glass, it does not carry the Baena Designation of Origin seal.

German Baena offers two types of extra virgin olive oil across its brands: filtered and unfiltered.

  • Filtered oil is available under the Hacienda Real and German Baena brands.

  • Unfiltered oil is available across all brands and packaging formats. However, when bottled in plastic, it is only available during the first months of the harvest season.

Finally, we highly recommend that our customers try the fresh, early-season olive oils — the first oils milled, which are neither filtered nor decanted. This is the purest and healthiest form of olive oil, freshly pressed and full of flavor. Due to their natural settling process, these oils are only available from late November to late January.

c) Peña de Baena

The olive oil from Peña de Baena is another extaordinary olive oil. However, we don´t sel it now.

Also, I recommen to read: Our promtoions. Here you will get tips to get the best price.

Baena oil is available in amazon, carrefour, El Corteingles and other large surfaces. However, I recommend buying these Baena oils in specialty stores. In these shops they inform and advise you. More when we arrive at the end of season, because the big surfaces throw the prices to remove all the old oil.

6. Frequently asked questions

Here you have frequently asked questions:

  • When does the first harvest come?

This cooperative usually starts to mill their olive oil at the beginning of November. Cosequently, the first harvest comes at the beginning of December normally. Also, we call their first olive oil, fresh olive oil and it is neither filtered nor decanted.

  • Why buy it here and not at Carrefour and amazon?

Baena oil is available in amazon, carrefour, El Corte Ingles and other supermarkets. However, I recommend buying these Baena oils in specialized stores. These stores will give you information and advice. Even more so when we reach the end of the season, as supermarkets throw away the prices to get rid of all the old oil.

  • What acidity do these oils have?

All our olive oils have a low acidity.

  • What is their expiration date?

We never send oils that have only a few months left before their expiration date.

  • Do you have any discount?

If you are looking for offers or promotions, please contact us, especially at the end of the year or the beginning of the next one, because at this time we want to renew our whole warehouse.
